The summer and fall study abroad programs in Istanbul, Turkey will go forward as planned, Syracuse University Abroad announced on Sunday.

Last week, SU Abroad announced it was ending the spring semester a few days early due to protests, and said it would continue monitoring the situation. After further consideration, the university decided to continue with the summer program as a result of the demonstrations becoming more peaceful, said Margaret Himley, associate provost for International Education and Engagement, in an email.

The summer session, called “Road to Democracy,” begins on June 15. The program is held at Bahçeşehir University, which is close to where some of the protests are happening.

The school will continue to monitor the protests daily, Himley said, with regular reports from the program’s director, along with providing students ongoing advice about how to stay safe in Istanbul.

She expects the four-week program in Istanbul to run smoothly, but said the school will remain vigilant in the event that violent protests re-emerge.

Said Himley: “Demonstrations are on-going, but if the situation escalates, we will of course take that into consideration.”
