To conclude the Blue Hen Invitational, Syracuse (16-3, 0-0 Atlantic Coast) dominated Morgan State (2-11, 0-0 Mid-Eastern Atlantic) 15-2 before defeating Quinnipiac (4-7, 0-0 Metro Atlantic) 4-3. The Orange’s 15 runs against the Bears were their most in a single game this season before they used a seventh-inning comeback to beat the Bobcats.
Though SU dominated the first leg of its doubleheader after splitting Friday’s games versus Quinnipiac and Delaware, Morgan State struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Cassie White hit a double down right field, driving in Millie Cousins and Olivia Pagano.
But that was all Morgan State could muster. From there, Syracuse scored at least one run from the fourth inning to the seventh. In the top of the fourth, the Orange scored their first run following a Taylor Posner single and an error.
Then, Gabby Lantier hit a single and advanced to second base on an error. This scored Tessa Galipeau, giving the Orange a 3-2. Throughout the rest of the frame, SU tacked on three more runs, extending its lead to 6-2.
In the top of the fifth, Galipeau’s second homer of the season tacked on an insurance run. In the top of the sixth, Jadyn Burney scored her second run of the game on Madelyn Lopez’s second RBI.
The Orange’s offensive explosion continued in the seventh, beginning with Burney drawing an RBI walk with the bases loaded. Then, another Morgan State error led to another SU run, giving it a 10-2 lead. Angie Ramos proceeded to drive in Lantier before Kelly Breen hit a double to drive in two more. The ensuing batter, Kaimi Tulua, hit a two-run double, putting a stamp on Syracuse’s blowout win.
SU starting pitcher Madison Knight cruised throughout the game, pitching a complete game while registering seven strikeouts.
After beating Morgan State, Syracuse faced Quinnipiac, which defeated it 4-1 Friday. The Bobcats scored the first run in the top of the first following an SU error. In the second inning, Quinnipiac added to its lead after Ella McGalliard drove in Brooke Hilliard with a single.
Syracuse scored its first run in the bottom of the third, following a Breen RBI single. But Quinnipiac extended its lead back to two on a Jaelyn Gonzalez RBI single in the top of the fifth.
The score remained unchanged until the Orange came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning. In its final opportunity, SU quickly loaded the bases, bringing up Laila Morales-Alves with one out. She laced a single into center field, bringing in Lopez and Ramos to tie the score 3-3. Then, Posner hit a walk-off single into right field, securing Syracuse a sweep to end the Blue Hen Invitational.
