SU graduate among 67 people dead in D.C. plane crash

Christine Lane, a 1997 SU graduate, and her son were among the 67 dead after Wednesday night's plane crash. The Lanes were returning from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas.

Christine Lane, a Syracuse University graduate, and her son died when an Army helicopter and an American Airlines jet collided near Reagan Washington National Airport outside of Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night.

Lane was one of 60 passengers and four crew members on the American Airlines flight when it collided with a Black Hawk helicopter carrying three Army members, syracuse.com reported. None of the passengers on the two aircrafts survived the incident. The American Airlines flight was headed to Reagan from Wichita, Kansas.

Lane graduated from SU in 1997, according to syracuse.com. Lane and her 16-year-old son Spencer were traveling from a development camp with another athlete after the U.S. Figure Skating Championships ended Sunday in Wichita. The two were traveling with the Skating Club of Boston.

In a statement, the Lane family described Christine as a creative and loving mother to Spencer and her other son, Milo. Lane and her family lived in Barrington, Rhode Island.
