Track and Field

Syracuse track and field’s Freddie Crittenden and Mary Malone lead way in pair of weekend meets

Syracuse split the team for the second consecutive week, sending sprinters, hurdlers, and jumpers to Miami and a group of distance runners to the Sam Howell Invitational at Princeton.

At the Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational Freddie Crittenden won the 110m hurdles in 13.53, 0.2 seconds ahead of the entire rest of the field. A 13.53 ranks Crittenden second in the nation thus far this outdoor season and first in the East Region.

After Crittenden, Syracuse’s depth showed with Richard Floyd (14.22), David Gilstrap (14.34), and Chevis Armstead (14.68) all turning in top-20 performances.

Winston Lee turned out his best race of 2016 with a sixth place finish in the 100m dash. Lee finished second though among collegiate athletes. He also anchored the winning 4 X 100m relay, composed of Crittenden, Kashif Miller, and Zack Warden. The victory came in a time of 40.13 seconds.

In high jump the Orange produced two top-10 finishes. Senior Jabari Butler finished sixth, reaching 2.05 meters and Randall Johnson finished 10th at 2.00 meters. Pascal Bastein finished 11th in the triple jump at 13.76 meters.

At Princeton sophomore Mary Malone led the way for the Orange in the 5k, finishing fourth in a time of 16:56.97. Senior teammate Rebecca Skodis managed a top-10 performance, finishing eighth in a time of 17:14.75. For the men, Juris Silenieks had the top 5k performance. The senior placed fifth in the field, and third among collegiate athletes with a time of 14:28.55.

In the middle distances, Paul Lovell placed sixth in the 800m in 1:53.20 and Nick Ryan finished 15th in the 1500m in 3:55.89.

The Orange will rest next weekend before splitting up again with the distance team destined for the Virginia Challenge and the sprinters, hurdlers, and jumpers making the trek to the Auburn War Eagle Invitational in Alabama.
