A Department of Public Safety officer hurt in a lightning strike on South Campus more than two weeks ago has been released from the hospital.

DPS Chief Tony Callisto said Officer Stanley Prue was released Saturday morning.

“I’ve got to say that his mood all along has been incredibly positive for the experience that he’s been through, and continues to be really positive,” Callisto said.

Late Sept. 1, Prue and senior detective Edward Weber were parked outside of Skytop Office Building. When Prue stepped outside to stretch, lightning hit the side of the car and launched him 4-6 feet away — leaving several burns across his body.

Both Prue and Weber were taken to Upstate University Hospital. Weber was released at about 4 a.m. on Sept. 2, and returned to work after a few days.

Callisto said Prue will be in outpatient physical therapy for “a period of time.” Callisto added Prue hopes he’ll be back to work relatively quickly — though he’s not sure when that will be.

The last time they spoke was Saturday afternoon, Callisto said, and Prue was still having some trouble with pain.

Prue has indicated he’s thankful, Callisto said, and that he’s been pleased with the university’s response.
