Student Association released a statement about the planned student protest for Syracuse University Department of Public Safety officer Joe Shanley early Monday morning, stating it “is not in a position to speculate” about the internal decisions of the department.

Shanley is a former corporal in DPS’ Law Enforcement and Community Policing Division. His position was changed Wednesday to public safety officer, causing SU and State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry students to organize a rally 2 p.m. Monday for him at the corner of Waverly and South Crouse avenues.

His daughter, Jes, said Shanley spoke out about racism, sexism and homophobia within the department. Thomas Wolfe, senior vice president and dean of student affairs, couldn’t comment specifically on any one employee, but said speaking out on these issues would not affect a personnel decision or go unnoticed in a unit he supervises.

Shanley hasn’t commented on the matter, as Jes Shanley said he might be seeking legal advice.

In the statement, SA said it doesn’t have special information about the department’s restructuring process.

But SA noted Shanley “has consistently shown himself to be on the side of students,” and that those within the organization consider him a friend.

The organization said as defender of the student body it will be in contact with SU’s administration to make sure Shanley continues to be a resource on campus and that students are protected.
