3 Syracuse players pick up All-American honors

Three members of the No. 2 Syracuse (13-2, 4-0 Atlantic Coast) lacrosse team have earned Inside Lacrosse All-American honors.

Senior midfielder Sergio Salcido and senior defender Scott Firman headline the first team, while senior midfielder Nick Mariano was named to the second team. Senior faceoff specialist Ben Williams received an honorable mention.

Salcido, who was named ACC Offensive Player of the Year, leads the team in points (50). After his breakout season last year (he was named an All-American as well), Salcido has become the main feeder of the offense and ranks 12th in the nation with 2.20 assists per game.

Firman is in the middle of a breakout season in his first year at close defense. The senior was passed down the famed No. 11 jersey, given to the team’s best defensive player. He has held opposing attacks to nearly a point under their season average and leads SU with 16 caused turnovers. Firman’s All-American season marks the 12th time in the past 14 years where Syracuse’s No. 11 has received All-American honors.

Mariano has become the engine of Syracuse’s offense in his second season since transferring from Massachusetts. The attack-turned-midfielder leads the Orange with 34 goals and is one point behind Salcido for the team lead. The senior was named a second-team All-American last season as well.

Williams has battled inconsistency, but in his senior season has broken countless records. He is now the program’s all-time faceoff wins (618) and ground balls leader (325).

Syracuse will take on Towson Sunday May 21 at noon at the University of Delaware in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.
